Medera Resina advanced composite louvre material

Medera Resina™ is the advanced composite material of the future…although beautifully displayed here by Solly, it’s unlikely to feature on the catwalks of the fashion capitals of the world! Medera Resina™ provides a natural and sustainable ‘timber effect’ and meets both today’s and tomorrow’s need for a technical, sustainable, and ecological usage demand. This fibre reinforced hybrid material is produced from approximately 60% rice husks, 22% common salt and 18% mineral oil. Blended and extruded to form a rigid material, which makes it both environmentally friendly as well as extremely weather resistant against sun, rain, snow or salt water. Click…

Solar shading: why architects should integrate it, and how BIM can help

As an architect observing the latest trends in building design, it’s likely that at some point, you’ll integrate a brise soleil into your CAD designs. While solar shading is an attractive, functional and relatively unusual design feature to include in building design plans, it can prove complex to draw up in CAD to illustrate how the end result might look. Thankfully, BIM can aid this process greatly. Before we discuss how BIM is an ideal solution if you’ve not yet considered why you should be integrating solar shading in your building design, here are a couple of reasons. Brise soleils…

UK BUILDINGS AS HOT AS DEATH VALLEY.

Death Valley is one of the hottest places on Earth and regularly reaches temperatures into the high 40s. It’s completely inhospitable for most human beings so why should we even consider working/living in a building that gets as hot as Death Valley? Tests show that some buildings in London can reach temperatures upwards of 45°C as a result of solar heat gain (London Southbank University / BBSA). And, with global warming on the up, it’s only getting hotter too. SO WHY ARE WE BANGING ON ABOUT IT? Along with soaring energy bills to cool buildings down and the damage that…

How to explain BIM to a 5-year-old?

How do you present complex information to an audience that is, let’s say, resistant to change? You can’t just deliver it in a charismatic way and expect everyone to just get it, right? I guess what I’m getting at here is how we communicate is crucial. We all know that BIM is not a software product. it’s not tangible either. It’s a methodology that links the design, manufacture of products and construction process. Let try and break that down into language that even a 5-year old can understand…. “BIM is when lots of people work together to build something using…

What is BIM?

BIM. Three letters that are radically reshaping the construction landscape – and that, for those of us in the industry, are becoming increasingly hard to ignore. It’s possible that you might know BIM inside out already. If so, good work – you’re more prepared than most, and excellently positioned to face whatever twenty-first century construction throws at you. But if you don’t, you’re far from alone. A lot of people have a vague awareness of BIM and what it is – but not enough to know how they can apply it in their own working lives. The first thing you…

5 biggest challenges of BIM (and how to overcome them!)

We read something this week about BIM that really caught our attention: “why is something so simple so complicated?” It’s a very good question, so we’ve decided to explore the challenges of BIM, and more importantly, how we can overcome them. We think the benefits of BIM outweigh its obstacles. And, it’s not just us; nearly 64% of a recent survey of people using BIM models said they have seen: “Positive signs and good results.” (BIM+ 2017 Survey). Using the BIM model makes life easier for everyone involved. It allows us to bring the clients vision into reality, it aids…

4 reasons your building needs timber solar shading

TIIIMMMBBBEEERRRR! Wood is one of the longest-standing building materials in existence. It’s been used in construction as far back as the stone age, some 10,000 years ago. Since then we’ve found new and innovative ways to replace timber with the introduction of materials like steel and concrete. Still, to this day timber is used to create amazing structures, from the humble log cabin right the way through to the famous Granot Loma in Michigan; an extravagant 26,000 square foot, 50-room house made from Oregon Pine. Impressive eh?! It’s fitting that even at the forefront of solar shading in building innovation…

Motorised louvres: their uses and benefits

Here at Solinear, one of our specialities is ‘operable solutions’, which is why we so celebrate motorised louvres. If you’re unfamiliar with this term, as many are, let us explain it to you: louvres are a type of external shutter which can be cleverly angled to admit both air and light, without letting rain and direct sunshine into a building. They are not a new concept. First developed in the Middle Ages, they were initially used as a means of allowing ventilation into, and out of, kitchens, while ensuring that the cold, hard elements stayed out. Modern louvres, which are…
