Solinear worked as part of the £45million investment in special education provision for Leeds children who have social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. They were tasked to bring stunning facades to three new-build schools in Seacroft, Belle Isle and Tinshill.
Task
The brief was to design, manufacture and install a contemporary floating vertical fin system using Western Red Cedar.
Solinear were brought in early in the design period as specialists at the tender stage by Interserve to work with the architects Atkins Global and the structural engineers BWB Consulting to design the steel frame and interface detailing to support a Medera Timber Vertical Fin System.
Action
Solinear provided specific design loadings so that the support steel frame sizing and centres could be determined along with the design of a new extruded aluminium bracket, enabling the vertical timbers to appear both floating and continuous, thus removing the need for cumbersome brackets. This system removed the need for the timber fins to be supported at the ends which really assists with the floating effect.
The Result
Solinear installed over 4500 linear meters of their Medera Timber Fin System. All three schools boast a beautiful floating timber façade that the local communities will enjoy for years to come.
