Specifying an architectural louvre system correctly requires more than simply selecting a blade profile or appearance. To achieve the required performance, a number of technical, operational, and architectural criteria should be considered during the design process.
Before selecting a specific louvre profile or system type, it is important to establish the performance objectives of the opening. Airflow requirements, weather protection, acoustic performance, security considerations, maintenance access, and architectural intent should all be considered as part of a coordinated design strategy. By defining the required outcomes rather than prescribing a particular product too early, design teams retain greater flexibility to optimise performance, simplify interfaces, and identify value engineering opportunities as the project develops.
One of the most important requirements is the airflow performance of the system. Designers should understand the required airflow rate, acceptable pressure drop, and available façade area, as these factors influence the free area, blade geometry, and overall louvre size required.
The required level of weather protection should also be established.
