What information should be provided when requesting a louvre quotation?


Learn what information helps produce an accurate architectural louvre quotation, including performance requirements, drawings, specifications, programme information, and coordinated enquiry documentation.

The more information available at enquiry stage, the more accurate and meaningful a louvre quotation is likely to be. While budget guidance can often be provided from limited information, understanding the project’s performance requirements, design constraints, and programme objectives allows a specialist contractor to recommend the most appropriate solution and identify potential coordination issues at an early stage.

One of the most useful pieces of information is the intended application of the louvre system. The requirements for a plantroom intake louvre, weather louvre, acoustic louvre, security-rated louvre, architectural screening system, or rooftop plant enclosure can differ significantly, and understanding the intended function of the system helps establish the appropriate design criteria from the outset.

Where available, performance requirements should also be shared. These may include:

  • Required airflow rates
  • Acceptable pressure drop limits
  • Weather performance requirements
  • Acoustic performance targets
  • Security requirements
  • Fire strategy considerations
  • Maintenance and access requirements

Understanding these requirements early allows the quotation to be based upon the desired performance outcomes rather than assumptions regarding a particular product or blade profile.

Project drawings are equally important. General arrangement drawings, elevations, sections, roof plans, façade layouts, and plantroom arrangements help establish opening sizes, system locations, interface requirements, access constraints, and installation considerations. Even concept-stage drawings can provide valuable context and help identify potential design or coordination challenges.

For architectural screening applications, it can also be beneficial to understand the design intent. Information relating to blade orientation, preferred profile types, materials, finishes, colours, and any planning requirements can all influence the proposed solution. Similarly, the project location may affect environmental exposure, wind loading, weather performance requirements, and finish selection.

For larger louvre installations, rooftop plant enclosures, or specialist systems, additional information regarding supporting steelwork, structural interfaces, builder’s work openings, and installation methodology can significantly improve quotation accuracy. Clarifying which elements are being provided by others helps avoid assumptions and ensures all parties are working from a common understanding of the project scope.

Consistency across the enquiry information is equally important. One of the most common challenges during the tender process is the presence of conflicting, incomplete, or ambiguous information within the enquiry package. It is not uncommon for architectural drawings, specifications, schedules, and performance requirements to contain inconsistencies, or for products and finishes to be specified that are either incompatible or technically unachievable. Examples might include references to anodised galvanised steel, galvanised aluminium, or conflicting performance requirements between drawings and specification documents.

Where ambiguity exists, different contractors may interpret the requirements in different ways, resulting in quotations that are difficult to compare on a like-for-like basis. In some cases, contractors may unknowingly price different solutions. In others, scope gaps or assumptions may not become apparent until later in the project, leading to additional costs, programme impacts, or commercial disputes.

Providing a coordinated and clearly defined enquiry package helps ensure that all parties are pricing the same scope and working towards the same performance objectives. This benefits not only specialist contractors, but also consultants, main contractors, cost consultants, and ultimately the client by improving budget accuracy, reducing commercial risk, and creating a more transparent procurement process.

The introduction of the Building Safety Act and the increasing emphasis on coordinated Stage 5 design information should continue to improve the quality and consistency of tender documentation across the industry. However, early clarification of requirements remains one of the most effective ways of obtaining accurate and meaningful quotations.

Programme information should also be provided wherever possible. Understanding key design, procurement, manufacturing, and installation milestones allows realistic lead times, project constraints, and delivery requirements to be considered from the outset.

Importantly, it is not always necessary to have every detail fully defined before making an enquiry. In many cases, early engagement allows performance requirements, coordination challenges, and value engineering opportunities to be identified before the design becomes fixed.
