When should architectural louvres be considered in façade design?


Learn why architectural louvres should be considered early in façade design and how early engagement helps optimise airflow, weather protection, acoustics, coordination, and cost.

Architectural louvres should ideally be considered during the early stages of façade and plant strategy development—typically from RIBA Stages 2–3 onwards. Early engagement allows louvre systems to be properly integrated into the building’s architectural, structural, and building services design, rather than being treated as a late-stage coordination item.

Louvre systems often serve multiple functions simultaneously, including:

  • Ventilation airflow 
  • Weather protection 
  • Plant screening 
  • Acoustic attenuation 
  • Solar shading 
  • Security performance 
  • Architectural integration 

Because these requirements can directly influence blade geometry, free area, structural support requirements, and façade interfaces, early coordination is essential to avoid compromise later in the design process.

Delaying louvre design until later project stages can lead to:
