This multi award-winning building is a research centre in the Netherlands with a wonderful example of a large-scale timber solar shading feature façade.
Youth Centre – Cabestany
- Architects: Oeco Architects
- Location: Toulouse, France
- Commissioned by: Gemeinde Cabestany
The exterior appearance of the Espace Guy Môquet in the southern French town of Castebany is a bit deceptive: but behind the timber solar shading that’s been built into the structure is a youth centre and communal living quarters.
French School – Beijing

The French School in Beijing boasts a stunning lattice-like timber solar shading that makes a filigree impression when seen from a distance.
Gai-Kodzor Winery – Southern Russia
- Architects: Kleinewelt Architekten
- Location: Southern Russia
- Commissioned by: Gai-Kodzor
A multi-purpose complex just five kilometres from the Black Sea with A louvred-timber solar shading system extending beyond the elevations to shade the glazed surfaces. There is also a large wooden deck that wraps around the winery, which also cuts in between the glass volumes to connect with a central circulation area.
Chateau de Versailles – France

The temporary entrance-pavilion is a 350 square metre structure that provides timber solar shading for crowd regulation, a visitor’s centre, security checks and a cloakroom.
University Library – South America
- Architects: RH+ Architecture
- Location: Cayenne, French Guiana
- Commissioned by: New University, Cayenne
The all-encompassing timber solar shading on The University Library creates a sheltered gallery around the perimeter in the South American country of French Guiana.
The Climatorium – Denmark
- Architects: 3XN
- Location: Lemvig, Denmark
- Commissioned by: Danish Government
With a focus on salt water, the lemvig climatorium’s main purpose is to collect knowledge about water, which is relevant to the trade and industry, as well as to tourism and the local population. The “wavy organic pocket” carved into the timber solar shading facade, and clad in light wood, will create a sheltered entrance for visitors and a stepped outside area for people to sit.
Royal Arena – Copenhagen

- Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
- Commissioned by: Arena CPHX
The 35,000m2 Royal Arena opened in February 2017. It’s specially designed for concerts and international level sporting events. The timber solar shading façade allows spectators to look out, and the curious to look in.
